Arsenal’s Danny Welbeck suffers leg injury against Sporting
LONDON — Danny Welbeck was carried off on a stretcher after suffering a potentially serious lower-leg injury during Arsenal’s Europa League game against Sporting Lisbon on Thursday.
Welbeck collapsed in pain after a collision in the Sporting penalty area 25 minutes into the game at the Emirates and immediately waved for medical attention as he writhed on the ground.
The medical staff then administered oxygen and applied a brace on his right leg before he was taken off on a stretcher.
Still images of the incident showed Welbeck’s right ankle caught underneath him in an awkward position as his body went to ground.
Welbeck’s Arsenal teammates looked visibly distressed as they watched the forward getting treated and took turns shaking his hand as he was carried off the pitch.
Welbeck has already suffered two long-term knee injuries since joining Arsenal in 2014, missing a majority of the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons.
